República Dominicana asumirá presidencia del SICA
At the summit, which will take place in the community of Buenaventura, in the province of Cocle 13 and December 14, Dominican Republic President Pro Tempore receive the regional body for the semester January to June 2014.
During this period the country shall be responsible for implementing and monitoring projects, agreements and targets set by the agency and will have the opportunity to share their experiences and contribute more actively to the process of strengthening regional integration.
The first Dominican president arrived at 2:30 pm by Scarlett Martinez, Rio Hato International Airport, where he was received by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Panama, Mayra Arosemena and the Dominican Ambassador to the Central American country, Octavio Lister .
This Friday, the agenda of President Danilo Medina includes a meeting with President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, and dinner for the Heads of State by President of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli.
The sessions of the Summit of SICA XLII begin Saturday morning at 14 am and will conclude on the same day in the afternoon, after which the president will return to the Dominican Republic.
The leaders discussed the state of affairs of the Central American integration process and progress on the priorities of the regional agenda.
Also, prospects and challenges of SICA-EU relations in the political, trade and cooperation, pillar of the Association Agreement (AA) signed between the SICA countries and the European Union last year. Similarly they will be addressed relations with New Zealand.
The Heads of State and Government also review the food and nutrition security policy, will take stock and assess progress in institutional strengthening and know of the proposal for the establishment of the Secretariat for Central American Democratic Security.
About the SICA
In order to make Central America a region of peace, freedom, democracy and development, was created the Central American Integration System (SICA) in 1993. The regional body is made up of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Dominican Republic.
The Dominican Republic became a full member of SICA last July, after participating as a regional observer for nine years. As a member of the agency, the country can take advantage of the opportunities offered by integrating the people of the member countries through the many important development projects running, and the benefits of new markets and businesses that represent the trade agreements.
